How To Relieve Worry About Major Storm Damage

Atlanta has been no stranger to major hurricanes and tropical storms in recent years. Most recently, Hurricane Michael came with 115 mph winds. What happens once it is safe to go outside and you see noticeable damage to your roof? Do you know what you should do?

After the Storm

Whenever a severe storm has hit, it is always a good idea to perform an outdoor inspection of your roof. This does not mean doing anything dangerous like climbing a ladder to inspect your roof, which should only be left to a qualified professional. Instead, you should stand back on the ground to view safely view your roof and see if there are:

  • Missing, torn, damaged or curled shingles
  • Signs of damaged flashing in areas around vent pipes, chimneys or roof valleys
  • Damage to gutters, soffits or fascia
  • Fallen branches or other debris laying on the roof

It is important to look around inside your home for any signs of water leaks on your ceilings or walls. Don’t forget to check your attic for damp rafters or leaks, too.

When Damage to Your Roof is Obvious

The first thing to do if you do find damage is not to worry, but you should move quickly. The longer you wait to have your roof repaired, the more likely the damage will spread throughout your home. Immediately contact your homeowner’s insurance company or agent to confirm what your insurance covers and what your deductible will be.

The next step is to find a trustworthy roofing contractor who will work with your insurance. It is always best to go with a local roofing contractor who has earned the trust of your community instead of fly-by-night storm chasers from out of the area. When searching for a roofing contractor look for the following:

  • A company who will treat your home like their own
  • No demands for upfront payment before starting repair work
  • Honest and trustworthy
  • A roof tech who will give you reasonable expectations and then exceed them
